Réserve Mouton Cadet St. Emilion 2018
Bordeaux, FranceI always thought appellation labels from the great French appellations would be the perfect venue to introduce people to the region’s wines, such as Hermitage, Pauillac, St. Estephe, or Sauternes. Still, for some reason, the wine never over delivered for the price, which is something required to gain momentum in the market. This St. Emilion knocked me out when tasted last month. It has all the hallmarks of a well made St. Emilion Cru, and the price is amazingly fair. 2018 Réserve St. Emilion may signal a new path at Mouton Cadet, a company that has the resources and the chateaux to do appellation wines better than anyone. The mix is 86% merlot, 13% cabernet franc, and 1% cabernet sauvignon. It has some of that ethereal St. Emilion character: slick, soft, and full flavoured but with lightness, and plump, juicy, ripe cherry and raspberry streaked with black currant and a touch of spice. Fully integrated and ready to drink, this is a lovely bottle of St. Emilion you can actually afford on special occasions.
