Together with his wife Lorella and son Lorenzo Scavino (5th gen), Luigi has 16 hectares of vines across Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, and Montelupo Albese. This Barolo blends 7 calcareous clay sites (based on Castiglione Falletto) with an average vine age of 45 years. It was aged in large Austrian and Slovenian oak for 2 years. In a beauty place right now, with wild and fresh florals, dried and primary cherry, and wild and perfumed raspberry woven throughout the medium+ palate, kissed deeply with bergamot. Framed with long, firm, slightly tacky black tea tannins, and buoyed by easy stony acidity, this finessed wine lingers with dried florals and salted dried cherries. Piedmont, ItalyAt Azelia, mixing the calcareous soil of Castiglione Falletto with the heavier clay soils of Serralunga d’Alba is the magic behind this beautiful wine. In all, six plots of vines from two villages, with vines closing in on 50 years of age, make the story behind the amazing purity of fruit you find. In 2017, a hot, dry year, the tannins are fully ripe, giving the wine a softness not often attributed to Barolo. Look for bright floral cherries and black licorice to kick off the nose. The tannins, Barolo dense, are equally chalky and able to support all the black cherry and tar you can throw at it. A modern, soft, dense Barolo big on styling that is aged 24 months in 25 - 50HL oak barrels of Slavonian, French, and Austrian origin. The Azelia estate resides in the village of Castiglione Falletto and goes back generations in the family. Azelia proprietor, Luigi Scavino, split ownership of two highly regarded Barolo vineyards: Bricco Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto; and San Rocco in nearby Serralunga, with his cousin, Enrico, who runs the neighbouring Paolo Scavino winery.
