Anakota Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota Vineyard El. 750 Feet 2019
Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California, United StatesExcessive winter rainfall left the vines in great shape to take on 2019, a year with above average warmth and heat spikes throughout July, August, and September, leading to a late September harvest. The Dakota is huge, with lifted black fruit and big peppery aromas. It’s jam-packed with black currant, blueberry compote, and more toasted cardamom spice, yet all that said, winemaker Pierre Seillan is the master of balance, and this wine has it in spades. The tannins are dense but soft with dark chocolate and a subtle undercurrent of minerality in the finish. This is not a wine to drink now, at least not without food. I advise cellaring this a decade or serve it with grilled T-Bone steak or leg of lamb on the spit. Since 2001, Anakota has made two single vineyards, single variety, single appellation estate cabs: Helena, Dakota; and Helena, Montana. Helena Dakota is a 12.4-acre block of vines sited below Mount St. Helena’s two highest peaks at 750 feet elevation. It is an ancient volcanic zone with reddish-brown, gravel/silt loam soils intermingled with volcanic rock well suited to the main Bordeaux grapes.Tasted: 09 January 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $125.00 | 750ml | select private retailers |
