Artemis Karamolegos Ftelos 2019

Aegean Islands - Santorini, The Islands, GreeceArtemis Karamolegos is one of the most dynamic wineries on the unique island of Santorini. Led by his grandfather, who started making wine and cultivating vines as a hobby in the 1950s, Artemis founded the winery in 2004. They own just over 3ha of vineyards (some over 100 years old) across Pyrgos, Megalorchori, Exo Gonia, Akrotiri and Fira, and have long term contracts to farm another 5 hectares. Ftelos is a single vineyard with 150 year old assyrtiko vines, in the district of Fira, facing the caldera rim. This spent 2 years in stainless, plus time in bottle prior to release. Insane levels of salinity lead this wine; there is no mistaking this is volcanic. A flinty lees-decked base is layered with wild herbs, lemon pith, white grapefruit, meadow grass, and heady tosses of flake salts, all of which flood the mid-palate, and linger long on the finish (the salt wins the endurance race). Such a profound, electric, and alive wine, of the sea, and soils, and one for enjoying copiously now or with years ahead.Tasted: 10 November 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
