Gérard Bertrand Domaine de l'Aigle Pinot Noir 2019
Limoux, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceThe Domaine de l’Aigle is covered by 31 hectares of vines planted between 250 and 500 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest vineyards in the Languedoc. It lies close to the village of Roquetaillade, near Limoux, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, a place Bertrand describes “as similar to Burgundy, where the grape originated. Here is an oceanic climate with continental influences, frequent rainfall, and a wide temperature range. Post ferment, the free-run juice is cooled for 24 hours and transferred to French oak barrels, where it goes through malolactic fermentation for nine months of ageing. The best barrels are racked and blended before bottling without filtering. The colour is a medium copper tint, and the nose is a mash of aromatic red berries with subtle spice. The attack is fresh and juicy with wild plums, black cherries, and white pepper with a lush underside that takes me to Pommard. Chinese pork dishes would be a good Vancouver match. The vines are grown in compliance with the rules of sustainable agriculture set by Terra Vitis, with traceability at every level and production techniques accredited by independent inspectors.Tasted: 01 October 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $43.99 | 750ml | select private retailers |
