Finca La Montesa 2018

Rioja, SpainTasted twice in the last 60 days, La Montesa is the vision of winemaker Alvaro Palacios. It takes its name from a hillside vineyard on the northeastern slope of the Yerga mountain in eastern Rioja. Alvaro, as only he could, describes the wine as "flowing wide in the mouth and possessing the wild strength of the mountain from which the wine hails." For a mountain wine, it is impressively balanced. Finesse best describes the style: silky, vibrant, red fruited, complete with exotic notes of orange and spicy, savoury notes. The garnacha/tempranillo blend is field selected and sorted at the winery, fermented separately in stainless steel tanks for spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. After a 35-day maceration, it was aged 12 months in new and used French (90 percent) and American oak barrels. I'd recommend La Montesa with lighter fare, such as chicken, turkey, or a piece of Manchego cheese.Tasted: 28 October 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
