Spearhead Pinot Noir Saddle Block 2020
East Kelowna Slopes, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaWinemaker Grant Stanley is a pinot-phile of the first order. He is all about respecting the site, something you see in this savoury, dark-fruited pinot pitching with prominent floral notes and sweet baking spices on the nose. The palate mixes cool plums, blueberries, and a dusting of mineral, earthy, tobacco, all over a silky undercarriage. Match this up with grilled root vegetables, salmon, or a duck pizza. Saddle Block Vineyard takes its name from the saddle shaped site home to the 12 year old vines growing at 1550’ above sea level in South East Kelowna. The site is planted with a mix of clones: 33% Dijon 777, 28% Dijon 667, 17% Dijon 115, 11% Dijon 828, and 11% of California’s Mt. Eden clone. The Spearhead single vineyard pinots are all processed the same way: hand-harvested, cold-soaked for 5-7 days, followed by a natural, 16 to 21-day ferment. It then spends over a year in French oak barrels (approximately 25 percent new). The Saddle Block Pinot Noir resides within the new East Kelowna Slopes sub-GI.Tasted: 22 September 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $33.00 | 750ml | winery direct, VQA and private wine shops |
