Madeira, PortugalThis latest project of Antonio Maçanita was created with his friend of 15 years, Nuno Faria, a Madeiran and restaurateur. The adventuresome duo have joined forces to explore the potential of these magical islands off Madeira. These 40-80 year old Caracol grapes on Porto Santo grow close to the ground on sandy clay limestone soils, protected by small walls. They were transported by boat to the island of Madeira since it is not legal to make wine in Porto Santo. It was fermented in stainless, on lees, where it remained for 3 months prior to blending and bottling. This is basically rock juice: light, lean, saline and stony, with a subtle sour citrus character, quiet melon, banana peel, and crab apple ruling the slight, streamline, yeasty lees palate, through the amply saline finish.
