Sage Hayward Vineyards Pinot Gris 2021

Southern Gulf Islands, British Columbia, CanadaSage Hayward Vineyards is a new family-owned estate found on Saturna, comprised of two brothers and their wives. They purchased and recovered mostly fallow vineyards on a property that Sea Star had owned, but had to sell. Tyler Cox is the winemaker, and Michael Bartier is a consultant. Though it states only pinot gris on the label, this wine blends in 15% chardonnay, from their Longfield and Ramsbottom vineyards. It was whole cluster pressed and fermented in stainless where it remained on lees for 5 months. Tight and sharp, with lean green apple, herbal grass, crab apple, lemon pith and peel on a light 10.6% palate. This certainly feels marine-swept, though hopefully the grapes can achieve a bit more ripeness and pass through a touch more acid in future. Racy.
