Rioja, SpainThis is a different side of Rioja, with garnacha replacing the more common tempranillo. The vines were planted in 1975 in the northern sub-region of Rioja Alavesa. That reflects the freshness found here, which belies the 14.5% abv, with crunchy strawberry and red cherry accented by sweet spices and dried herbs, with little noticeable oak. The palate has a juiciness, densely packed with expressive fruit and structured by fine, powdery tannins. It's a fun discovery for garnacha/grenache lovers, which stays true to its Rioja terroir. Recommended and good value.Tasted: 10 March 2023Tasted by: Prices:

Rioja, SpainThirty-five years in, Bodegas Izadi is a relative newcomer to Rioja Alavesa. Owned by Gonzalo Antón, Anton made his money in hotels and restaurants and set out to produce wine that would work at that level. Larrosa Negra is crafted to showcase the juicy, fruity garnacha grape. It is grown at the highest altitude in Rioja at 700 metres on very stony soils. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for a short six months in second and third-year French and American oak barrels. Bright, fresh, juicy and ready to drink, this is a wine for chicken, lamb chops, or vegetable lasagna.Tasted: 01 June 2022Tasted by: Prices:
