Eden Valley, South Australia, AustraliaThe Eden Valley Viognier released under the Samuel's Collection honours Samuel Smith, founder of Yalumba. Winemaker Louisa Rose works with 11 blocks and seven separate vineyards that age on their lees in various older French oak vessels for ten months. The nose is viognier fragrant, pitching honeydew, white flowers, and lime rind. On the palate, the sweet, peach, lush fruit spreads from front to back across a creamy layer streaked with lime rind and spice. So firm and tight, it sets up nicely for the dinner table. Famed British food and wine writer Fiona Beckett thinks the match is mild spicy noodle dishes like Pad Thai, or chicken salads with apricot, peach or mango. The wood imparts a savoury suppleness to this fragrant, full bodied white, layering lush white peach, ripe honeydew, fleshy apricot, jasmine, lime pith across a cold cream palate, seasoned with finely rasped exotic spices. With everything knit together so well, this ample wine retains an air of finesse and subtlety, words not usually associated with the grape.
