Summerhill Pyramid Winery Spadefoot Toad Sangiovese Organic 2018

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Spadefoot Toad vineyard is located in Oliver, and the sangiovese is organic. The wine is fermented in insulated bins with daily hand cap management. Post ferment, it is aged 26 months in a combination of 14 percent new and 86 percent neutral French oak barrels. 2017 was a terrific bottle, given how hard it is to make sangiovese outside of Italy, but 2018 may be as good. The nose is oaky even at 14 percent new wood, which gives you an idea of how complicated winemaking can be, but behind that oak is plenty of ripe fruit, baking spice, vanilla, and earthy sangiovese notes that keep it on track. Organic grower Ron Firman, who tends his small acreage like a garden, used a mild growing season to turn out a balanced and fresh red wine. I like the sound of spaghetti and meatballs.Tasted: 12 March 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
