Gómez Cruzado Rioja Reserva 2014
Rioja, SpainGómez Cruzado operates out of their 135-year-old cellar (founded 1886) in the Station District in Haro, the historic heart of Rioja. The bodega focuses on sustainably farmed old vine plots and indigenous varieties. This Reserva blends 85% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from 30-year-old bush vines located at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria and its alluvial, calcareous, and ferrous soils. The remaining 5% of Garnacha comes off bush vines near the village of Badarán. It was native fermented in stainless cones before aging for 18 months in new and second-year French barriques, followed by two years of bottle ageing. Sultry black fruit caresses the textural palate, with wild blackberry, black plums, black cherry imbued with savoury stoniness and atop worked leather. Tannins are ample, both fine and gritty, housing this through a lingering ferrous finish. Beautiful acidity throughout keeps this fuller red feeling fresh. Though still stately as per the category, this is Rioja Reserva through a modern lens.Tasted: 10 March 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:BC | $41.99 | 750ml | estimated retail in select private wine shops |
