De Loach Chardonnay 2018
Russian River, Sonoma County, California, United StatesFounded by Cecil and Christine De Loach, the winery is now run by the Burgundian estate Jean-Claude Boisset. The winery's 7-hectare estate vineyard has been restored to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Its cool, foggy Russian River Valley climate plays to the notion of slow, even ripening, which is a blueprint for chardonnay. The fruit comes off a mix of sites and soils, contributing complexity. Post ferment, the juice undergoes malolactic conversion in stainless steel tanks, concrete vats, and French oak barrels, followed by ten months of ageing. Cool pineapple, lemon custard and brown spices mark its juicy flavours, flecked with fresh lemon and grapefruit. There is a leesy garlic finish to balance the fruity notes with butterscotch and baked apple hints.
