Phantom Creek Estates Becker Vineyard Cuvée N° 27 2019

Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaChanges at Phantom Creek Estates continue with the arrival of winemaker Mark Beringer in the fall of 2021, joining consulting winemaker Olivier Humbrecht, who has been working with the white wines for the last few years. The winery has expanded its reach north to Skaha and west to the Similkameen to control its fruit sources fully. The latest Becker Cuvée is a mix of 55/28/9/7/1 cabernet franc, merlot, carmenere, syrah, and cabernet sauvignon. The style has been rich and will undoubtedly stay that way in 2019. There is a strong balsamic, spicy, savoury undercurrent with smoky cassis notes. On the palate, it is similar, with black fruit, roasted coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla dominating in its youth. I’m tempted to say wait a decade, but you might want to keep an eye on this as it ages over the next three to five years to ensure it remains on course. In a challenging growing season, the significant amount of franc has left it with some rusticity that will probably suggest you drink it sooner than later as time marches on.
