The grapes, clone 239, are sustainably farmed in the southwest facing, clay rich, seven year old Kitsch family vineyard owned by matriarch Esther Kitsch. The first impression is a rush of apple juice with oxidation, which points to fermentation in neutral French puncheons three months on lees. The texture is fine, almost weighty, and works hard to offer a more complex picture to riesling lovers. Perhaps another two or three years in bottle will help this wine pull it all together. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis special selection comes off a southwest facing, clay soiled block of their Lake Country estate, planted in 2013 to clone 239 riesling. After whole cluster pressing, this was fermented in neutral French puncheons, followed by 3 months on lees. The wood gives a round softness to this off-dry wine, feeling sweeter than its 2.8 g/L would imply. That said, ample racy limey acidity cuts through any sweetness, leaving a streak of green apple, crunchy pear, white grapefruit in its lengthy, persistantwake. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaEsther's Block is a 2.4-acre parcel planted to clone 239 at Kitsch's home vineyard in East Kelowna. The block may be southwest facing, but you don't feel that warmth here. The story is all about the cool restraint that typifies East Kelowna. It's precise and pure, with bright lime, white florals, and chalk. It's lip-smackingly dry, and beautifully balanced, with 3 g/L of residual sugar that's easily washed away by the brisk, citrusy acidity.
