Rippon Mature Vine Riesling 2019

Central Otago, South Island, New ZealandIn 1975, Rolfe Mills, third generation on his family's Lake Wanaka farm in Central Otago, started to plant a series of experimental rows of Vitis vinifera. Together with his wife Lois they released their first commercial vintage in 1989. Today, Jo and her husband Nick Mills run their portion of the farm, around 150 acres, with Nick’s mother, Lois, while Nick’s cousins farm the other half. This older vine biodynamically farmed riesling is rooted in their estate's schist soils, which you can feel through the stony, savoury structure of this dry riesling. The sleek, slender body buzzes with minerality, and is gripped with phenolics, imparting lime pith and peel, pear skin, tangerine stretched across a medium bodied form. The finish lingers with salinity and trails off in an electric mineral vibrato. Striking, if shy, now in youth, this will reward with cellaring, and the Diam cork (no stelvin for NZ!) will ensure it has a solid future ahead.Tasted: 15 November 2021Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
