Gérard Bertrand An 1877 St Chinian 2018

St Chinian, Coteaux du Languedoc, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceThe 1877 pays tribute to the modern revolution brought by the steam engine, and the first Saint-Chinian railway that enabled wines to be transported from the Languedoc to cities beyond. This cuvée blends Syrah and Mourvèdre from sandstone and schist slopes. The destemmed grapes have a 3 week fermentation and maceration before pressing into a mix of stainless and oak (33% wood) for 9 months prior to bottling. Pouring a deep, inky hue, this is somewhat closed upon first opening, so give the compact, wild black fruit time to expand with some airtime. Dense and full, with dark chocolate, cassis, wild cherry, dusky blackberry, and smouldering spice. Tannins are ample and sticky, somewhat blocky, reflective of the Mediterranean sunshine, and ripe fruit. The finish ends on a bitter chocolate and herb note. Certainly more earthy / savoury than some of Bertrand's wines, and a suitable partner for roast beef or roast root veg.Tasted: 03 November 2021Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
