Penfolds RWT Shiraz Bin 798 2019
Barossa Valley, South Australia, AustraliaThe RWT is no longer a Red Wine Trial; hence it's an additional and coveted Bin Number 798. Yet that moniker has little effect on a wine already established as one of the best in the entire Penfolds lineup. The French oaked version of Grange continues to be a standout year after year. In 2019 the wine spent 18 months in 57% new French oak while the remainder sat in one-year-old hogsheads. The fruit is Barossa Valley, and it's as opulent and fleshy as ever in complete contrast to the power of multi-regional Grange. It is still a big wine but with a linear elegance and style, undoubtedly aided by the French oak. Glossy, intense, and awash in black and blue fruit, this will live for decades in the bottle and delight all who open it over time. The 2019 growing season was extremely dry and warm in the Barossa, with only 61% of the long-term average rainfall. Low yields delivered Barossa Valley shiraz with rich, dark, intense flavours and fully ripe tannins. Not quite as luscious as 2018, but still a very solid wine. Lamb shoulder would be a great match to the intensity and depth of this red wine. Collectors dig in; this is a good example of an expensive wine that is of great value.Tasted: 10 September 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $249.99 | 750ml | BCLS |
