Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaCarr’s Landing would seem like the perfect place to grow grüner veltliner, with its warm days and super cool nights. It is grown on granitic soils at elevation, and fermented in a mix of old and new oak and stainless steel. It is not your edgy Austrian version but rather a fun, juicy white with papaya, lime rind, and sagebrush, followed up by a touch of crushed stone. Peak Cellars Grüner Veltliner 2020

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom the granitic soils of Carr's Landing Vineyard, this Grüner Veltliner was picked just before the Okanagan's recording-breaking snowfall on October 23. Fermentation was in a combination of stainless steel, 1, and 2 year old barrels, before being blended into stainless in January. This really speaks to the cooler growing conditions of Lake Country. Far from exuding long hangtime, this is quite restrained in style, led by grapefruit, peach, delicate white pepper, and fine herbs. Peak Cellars Grüner Veltliner 2020

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis grüner comes off their Carr's Landing estate vineyard's granitic soils, and was fermented in a mix of French oak and stainless. Post-ferment the wine underwent weekly bâtonnage for 1-2 months prior to the final blend and rest in stainless. It's a lovely balance between the cool stony steel notes, and the textural, flinty, savoury notes from the oak, all in harmony even at this youthful age. Crisp Okanagan orchard apples and pears ring throughout, lined with a fine layer of herbal lees to a white pepper finish. Certainly a grape that seems well suited to site, and I hope more in the cooler parts of the Okanagan give it a try.Tasted: 16 July 2021Tasted by: Prices:
