Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaIt’s sometimes hard to imagine how far BC wine has come until you taste something like the Orofino 2019 Chardonnay. It is not even estate fruit, but the family manages the Cawston Flats site and farms the fruit. There is important, direct input with the grape growing and harvesting, and the wine is boffo for the price. It is fermented in 20% new French oak, which in my opinion, is the max for northern chardonnay fruit. It spends nine months on its lees and another nine months in bottle before it is released. The attack is all mineral, sand, bones, citrus and Meyer lemons with crisp fruit dusted in sagebrush and desert scrub magic dust. Savoury, salty, focused, and delicious, there is nothing but finesse here. And they are giving it away. Burgundy be scared.Tasted: 14 June 2021Tasted by: Prices:

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom a vineyard Orofino farms and manages on the rich and fertile Cawston Flats, near their home estate, this was destemmed and bladder pressed, settled in tank and then moved to French barrels (20% new) for ferment. It remained there for 9 months prior to bottling, and another 9 months rest before release. Though the soils are fairly stone-free, this wine screams Similkameen to me, with a bony, stony stencilled framework housing bright meyer lemon, crunchy green apple, wild meadow herbs and flake salts. Savoury and structural, with a wave of flintiness yet still very finessed, this drinks beautifully now and will with time ahead.Tasted: 13 June 2021Tasted by: Prices:
