Modest Wines By Jove Sangiovese 2019

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom first whiff, this was quite distinctly sangiovese. This divine grape, from sanguis Jovis means ‘the blood of Jove’. Hence, By Jove. Modest Wines is a new project from the folks at Mt. Boucherie, headed by newish GM Jesse Harnden, and was originally designed to be a tiny project to pair with the food from their on-site Honest Butcher restaurant. Jesse's creativity started flowing, however, and Modest Wines now sources fruit from a few different vineyards in the Okanagan, including their estate, to make more edgy, adventuresome wines. This came off Black Sage Bench's Quinta Ferreira vineyard, and has 5% merlot and cabernet franc blended in, harkening the Super Tuscan tradition. Savoury, cedar-edged cherry, thorny wild blackberry, tomato leaf flood a fuller, fresher palate, seasoned with desert sage and wild rose, and finishing with a saline lift. Tannins are lightly grippy/sticky, and perfectly suited to the southern Okanagan fruit. Impressive.Tasted: 24 May 2021Tasted by: Prices:
