Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, California, United StatesQuintvs is a cabernet sauvignon barrel selection from the five distinct soil types found at the winery's Howell Mountain estate, including the region's lauded iron-rich clays and powdery volcanic ash. Philippe Melka is the consultant winemaker, so you can imagine the league and profile they're striving for with this massively weighted bottle. This spent 22 months in 73% new French barrels. Deep, plush, and concentrated, with blackberry, black current, tobacco, and black plum florals filling the fleshy, full palate. Tannins are polished, but still quite grippy at this youthful state, right through the warming finish. Needs a good 5 years to settle into itself, as intended.
