Santa Carolina Herencia 2018
Puemo, Valle del Cachapoal, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileYou can’t miss Herencia on the shelf: it is the bottle that looks like a magnum and weighs like one too. It is all carmenère from the Cachapoal Valley’s Puemo district, and it is impressive. The nose is a mix of smoky damp leaves burning outdoors on a cool fall day flecked with floral, mineral black fruit, and a touch of pepper. The textures are dense, the tannins sweet, and fruit black and showy before the freshness and salt and pepper notes kick in to run through its long, lingering, clean finish. It is a terrific bottle of carmenère that, while drinkable, will have a long life ahead. Chile doesn’t get the respect it should from the global wine community, hence the big bottle, but this suggests the world has it wrong. Chile is perfectly capable of competing and competing at a very high level. A wine for collectors.Tasted: 26 March 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $180.00 | 750ml | estimated retail price |
