J. L. Chave Sélection Offerus Saint-Joseph 2017

Saint Joseph, Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceFor the Domaine Chave experience, at an approachable price, look to JL Chave Selections, a négoc operation sourcing fruit from across the Rhone. Jean-Louis makes these wines to showcase what he believes to be the potential of appellations with which he works. The Chaves have been wine growers in the northern Rhône since 1481, with the current generation of Gérard and son Jean-Louis representing 16 generations of unbroken lineage. Offerus is syrah from baby to 80 year old vines, on eastern sloping granite soils off estate vineyards in Mauves, Tournon, and St. Jean de Muzols. This was half destemmed, and native fermented in wood tonneaux and stainless steel tanks before aging in barriques and foudres for 18 months. Savoury, spiced, and structural, this draws brooding black fruit, wild game, tobacco, and dark earth across the fuller palate. Tannins are ample, and starting to sink into the depth of flavour, but still peaking through the edges at points.Tasted: 25 February 2021Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
