Luján de Cuyo, Northern Region, Mendoza, ArgentinaThis is classically-styled Argentinian malbec made by legendary Catena winemaker Alejandro Vigil. The fruit comes from the elite malbec terroir of 'high and dry' Gualtarray in the Uco Valley. However, great effort is made to make this malbec fresher, juicier, leaner, more claret-like. The inclusion of 10% cabernet franc adds discipline and depth, and 50% whole bunch fermentation provides lively fruit. The resulting wine combines classic aromas of violets, red cherries, and dark plums with appealing leafy and earthy notes. Loaded with red, black, and blue fruit and a grinding of black pepper, El Enemigo is full-bodied with smooth tannins, burnished by 15 months in large oak casks. The highly distinctive finish is juicy and fresh, with a very attractive lingering herbal complexity. Quite literally made for the barbecue. The juicy tang of the wine powerfully evokes the inviting aromas of steaks and chops over a smoky charcoal fire.Tasted: 27 February 2021Tasted by: Prices:

Luján de Cuyo, Northern Region, Mendoza, ArgentinaThis malbec, bolstered by 10 percent cabernet franc, was fermented by indigenous yeasts, using 50% whole cluster. It then aged in oak foudres for 15 months. The result is a spicy, dark-fruited malbec, showing pepper, cloves, smoke, and juicy blackberry. With some time in the glass, the fruit comes more to the foreground, but I find this a touch rustic. It has impressive freshness and depth, though, and it's quite an interesting take on malbec.Tasted: 27 February 2021Tasted by: Prices:
