Simi Winery Landslide Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California, United StatesFrom Alexander Valley, a very warm Sonoma County sub-region some describe as the Napa Valley of Sonoma. Simi was the first winery to use the Alexander Valley moniker on its labels long before AVAs came into play. Landslide Vineyard takes its name from a landslide that blocked the original Russian River run, diverting the water west to the Pacific Ocean from a course that ran through the Napa Valley. There are three main terroirs: the top or upper area; the middle vineyard; and the low sections. Each brings a certain complexity to the blend. Look for a broad structure with both black and red fruit with dry, firm, mountain tannins. Notes of pomegranate, red currants, and cassis carry through a long, dry, youthful finish. It not often you describe cabernet as delicious, but this one sure is. It is barely legal as a cabernet sauvignon at 75 percent mixed with 9/7/4/3/2 malbec, cabernet franc, petit verdot, merlot, and tannat. Impressive. The winery recommends several dinner matches, including pappardelle pasta with duck and porcini ragu, braised short ribs and polenta, or grilled portobello mushroom on toasted brioche. I'm ready. Buy and cellar through 2026. Super value.Tasted: 14 January 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
