Mount Veeder Winery Reserve 2016
Napa Valley, California, United StatesThe wine is legally a cabernet sauvignon at 88 percent cabernet sauvignon paired with 10 percent malbec and two percent petit verdot. As its name suggests, Mount Veeder is at elevation, from 1,500–1,600 feet above sea level in what could be described as a rugged mountain environment. The result is low yield, loose cluster, small bunches of high quality fruit. The harvest is described as Zen-like as pickers move up and down the hillsides taking fruit from the uphill side of the vine only, or the downhill side, or just the north, south, east, or west section. The colour is blackish red and opaque. The nose complex, intense, and layered with blackberry, Bing cherry, and cassis with a beautiful savoury underside of dried herbs and pepper pushing through a along finish. There are mountain tannins, but the edges are just soft enough to let you in even at this early stage. A blockbuster cabernet that will have wide appeal.
