Domaine Jamet Syrah 2017
Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceJean-Paul Jamet began his career in the vineyards of Côte Rôtie in 1976 at the age of 16, working with his father, Joseph, who bottled his first wine that year. With the 2017 vintage, Jean-Paul, rightfully one of the legends of the appellation, celebrated his 41st year growing and making Côte Rôtie. This IGP comes from three parcels: young-vine Côte Rôtie; a plateau of mica schist, next to domaine and outside of AC Côte Rôtie; and a plateau above Condrieu. This is 90% destemmed, fermented in stainless, and spends 11 months in 20-30 year old barrels before being bottled unfiltered. The cloudy haze in the glass reflects the latter, and the noticeable green twinge reflects the small amount of whole bunch, both contributing to the complexity of this medium (12.5%) red. A puff of smoked meat and swing of reduction appears at very first (as is syrah's way), leading off into tart black raspberry, alluring perfumed plum, geraniums, and black cherry. Acidity is crunchy, and tannins are fine and long, guiding this slender wine to a tart red currant and cola-spiced finish. Enjoys a very brief chill, some airtime, and partnering with roasted mushrooms and/or salmon.
