Phantom Creek Estates Becker Vineyard Cuvée N° 25 2017
Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaBecker Vineyard dates back to 1977 when it was home to Germanic white varieties as part of the original Becker Project established to assess the region's grape-growing potential. By 1993 it was clear late-ripening red varieties were suited to the steep slopes of the upper Black Sage Bench. In 2017 the wine was dominated by merlot (44) with a mix of cabernet sauvignon (34) and cabernet franc (22), which was matured for 17 months in French oak, 42 percent new. Like last year, the nose is an aromatic affair of desert scrub, sagebrush, and spicy balsamic. The palate is awash in slick black fruit, presenting harmony and balance as they slide into the finish. Chalky, dense tannins support the wine as it finishes with dark plummy nuances and a twist of savoury cedar. Solid, if a touch less compelling than 2016. Time will tell. Cellar this one for six to eight years to allow the whole picture to develop.Tasted: 23 October 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $60.00 | 750ml | winery online/direct |
