Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrind Estate Winery is a new lakefront winery facility and visitor centre on the historic Bennett family property in West Kelowna, just south of Quails’ Gate. Owner Markus Frind purchased the property in 2017 and has been busy acquiring vineyard sites up and down the valley ever since. The fruit here is mostly from Rock Pile Vineyard in Oliver. The style is mid-weight at 13% alcohol with soft tannins and intense bright red cherry and cassis dusted with spicy sagebrush and cedar. As ripe as the red fruit is, the style is more Loire than California. Certainly, it will have appeal to traditional franc freaks. You can drink this now or hold three to five years. It is aged in French and American neutral oak barrels for only ten months, with a small portion going into new French cigar barrels. This franc is primed for drinking now, with soft and sueded tannins, wild cassis, ripe blackberry, cedar bough, and pepper spicing filling the medium bodied frame.
