Emilia-Romagna, ItalyThe winery history began in 1934 when Lorenzo Motti and Riziero Camellini decided to group initially seven and then twelve growers of Lambrusco and Ancellotta to create a new production model in this hilly region. Gradually more and more grape growers associated themselves with the idea, and in 1936 the Cantina Albinea Canali was officially founded. Rich in the Italian tradition, the name ‘Ottocento’ evokes Italy’s romanticism toward the 1800s. The word for black, ‘nero,’ refers to the wine’s nearly opaque deep purple hues. From the Canali family, one of Italy’s leading producers of sparkling wines, this dry, dark/opaque purple fizz blends 50% Lambrusco Salamino, 40% Lambrusco Grasparossa, and 10% Lancellotta into a structural, powerful fizz, with heaps of rosemary and thyme scenting the scrubby cassis, wild blueberry, thorny plum, rock salt. Tannins are finely grippy, and the smooth palate is lined with blackberry jam, finishing with a snap. The acidity in here eats up the 10g/L RS, leaving a brisk, dry finish.
