Zorzal EGGO Blanc de Cal 2019

Gualtallary, Tupungato, Valle de Uco, Tunuyán, Central Region, Mendoza, ArgentinaThere are wines that challenge norms, expectations, assumptions and taste buds. This is one of them. Zorzal’s Eggo shines a pale gold in the glass. The aromas are a mix of fruit and earth – grapefruit, verbena and celery leaf with wet clay and dusty stone notes. There is a wild and woolly aspect to the aromas, abetted by the toasty/yeasty signature of lees ageing. Does it smell like textbook sauvignon blanc? Absolutely not, but it hints at it with grass, herbs and citrus pith. Stinging acidity (in a good way) drives lemon and crisp apple flavours deeply into the palate, where a sneaky richness starts to build. The finish is especially compelling: textural, juicy, botanical, pungent and dripping with mineral complexity. It’s a touch reduced now so aerate it well with a good slosh in a decanter. Zorzal is one of Argentina’s most innovative and trending winery – and it has a Canadian connection with a faction of Calgary investors. There are three Michelini brothers who each have their own wineries but collaborate on pretty much everything. Juan Pablo Michelini is the winemaker for Zorzal’s Eggo line (there is a pinot noir and malbec too). A local company made the concrete eggs which help to convey the mineral rich depths of Gualtallary and Tupungato, two special zones within the Uco Valley. Now for food: you’ll unlock latent fruit in Blanc de Cal by pairing with savoury tangy dishes like goat’s cheese salad, chili and lime fish tacos or couscous tabbouleh.Tasted: 21 September 2020Tasted by: DJ KearneyPrices:
