River Stone Merlot 2018
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaSmoky skies slowed the ripening in 2018, adding extra hang time, although it should have little or no effect in the warm south Okanagan. The grapes come from the home estate vines growing around the Oliver-based winery closing in on 15 years of age. The vineyard is made up of south-facing slopes sitting over rock, sand, and gravel, rich in calcium. Post ferment, it is aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for approximately 18 months. It opens with dark fruit aromas and spice. The spice leads on the palate with the oak, suggesting it needs time to settle in. Black raspberry, mint, and spice line the palate from front to back with a savoury, dry, firm finish. Best now with steak or a rich, creamy cheese, or wait three to five years for the full picture.Tasted: 01 September 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $25.90 | 750ml | winery online/direct |
