Casa Castillo Monastrell 2017

Jumilla, Valencia and Murcia, SpainJosé Maria is a 3rd generation owner / vintner of Casa Castillo, a farm that began as a rosemary plantation, but has evolved into one of Jumilla's top wine estates. When José Maria's grandfather purchased the property in 1941, at 850m on the chalky, cooler slopes of Sierra del Molar, there were already scattered vineyards dating back to the 1870s. José and his father began to replant the vineyards in 1985, and 1991 was their inaugural vintage. This Jumilla comes from younger vines mainly from their La Valle vineyard. Approximately 10% comes from a seasoning of syrah and garnacha. After a native ferment in tank, this is aged for 9 months in neutral 500L French barrels, concrete, and foudre. Plush and enveloping dark plum, wild blueberry, blackberry, thorny cassis is framed by soft tannins, and lofted with a potent freshness via the altitude and soils. Though this is 15%, it still holds bright, and would be a great pairing for sauced pork or mushroom medallions.Tasted: 03 September 2020Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
