CedarCreek Platinum Block 5 Chardonnay 2018
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaBlock 5 sits at the top of the estate Home Block Vineyard, high above Okanagan Lake. Year two of organic farming drastically reduced the canopy and aided in developing riper flavours with less sugar, a win-win. It was wild fermented in a mix of puncheons and French oak barrels that includes a portion of texture softening malolactic fermentation over 12 months of ageing. It goes into stainless steel for six months before bottling. An early warm start and a cool finish contribute to a terrific wine under 13 percent alcohol. In the glass, it is attention-grabbing, mixing mineral, wet stones, in a reductive style with lemony, floral savoury fruit that is deliciously complex. Wow, kudos to winemaker Taylor Whelan.
