Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is from La Côte Vineyard on the Similkameen's Upper Bench, a vineyard which is currently in transition to organic certification. The fruit was whole cluster pressed, then fermented and aged in neutral French puncheons, which just provide a faint accent to the wine. You'll find a lively, youthful viognier, bottled after five months on its lees, that shows fresh-picked stone fruits and appealing floral aromatics. There's lots of fruit, but it's bright and with surprising freshness, far from the caricature of itself that viognier can become. Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaClos du Soleil owns and runs an organically-farmed estate named La Côte Vineyard. The upper bench Keremeos fruit is the subject of this wine. Wisley fermented in older French puncheons, this aged on its lees for five months. I love the slimmed-down style, and the minerality and brightness of the Similkameen are shining through in the form of ripe orchard fruits and a full, juicy, spicy finish with barely a whisper of sugar. After a whole cluster press, this was fermented in older French puncheons, and aged on lees for 5 months. Viognier's inherent lushness and fatness is smartly tamed here, with plump orchard fruits, juicy mandarin, nectarine, star anise, and ample spice, all in a tidy 3.8 g/L.
