Vérité La Muse 2016

Sonoma County, California, United StatesIs La Muse the best California merlot, even though it doesn’t have merlot on its label? I think so. Winemaker Pierre Seillan is a disciple of the cru concept, and Vérité La Muse is his ode to Pomerol’s merlot/cabernet franc mix. In this case, the combination is 93 percent merlot joined by two key elements: five percent cabernet franc, and two percent malbec. It opens with a breathtaking savoury smoky element that sets the tone right off the top, and an underlying stony mineral character that works as a base from the front of the wine to the back. The palate is awash with a complex mix of black plums, dark chocolate, wild herbs, and dusty, silky, dense, soft tannins that add the kindest of structure to allow the fruit to express itself. What a delight. You can drink this now, but it will repay cellaring through 2025 many, many times over. Uncannily Masseto-like.Tasted: 11 April 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
