Niche Wine Co. Pinot Noir 2018
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaNiche is a small batch, and frankly, niche. Handmade is the word with the owners growing the fruit and making the wine. The pinot noir all comes off the Hugh & Mary Vineyard in West Kelowna, where days are warm, but the nights are cool. The vineyard, a mix of clones 667 and 115, is settling in with some 10-21 years of age. The winemaking is blessedly basic: the fruit goes through a light crush, cold soaks for several days in half-ton bins before it is fermented to dry, and basked pressed off into French oak. I am impressed with this year’s model, now all in new and used French oak. The colour is medium, the nose an aromatic herbal red cherry affair with spice and earth. The attack is fresh, with a rush of acidity that works through the wine, surrounded with light, soft tannins—all in all, a much better effort than previous editions. The fattiness of salmon is a perfect foil to this wine.Tasted: 29 March 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $31.00 | 750ml | winery online/direct |
