Domaine Lafond Tavel Roc-Epine 2018

Tavel, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceThis is one rosé that I hotly anticipate each new vintage - partly because Tavel is where I start my pink sipping in earnest (like, right now) but also to salute this appellation's rosé only focus. Pinky crimson in the glass, it signals substance and depth of flavour with glossy glass coating viscosity. Aromatically it conveys the brandied cherries and ripe strawberries of grenache, floral notes of syrah and a distinct stamp of dusty, rocky terroir. Mouthcoating with spirity red fruit flavours that quickly morph into beguiling botanical, savoury, rocky, vinous complexity. The blend in this excellent 2018 vintage is grenache 60%, cinsault 20%, and syrah 20% with unobtrusive winemaking in large format oak that allows the clays, stones and limestone gravels a strong voice. Full-bodied and oily (in a good way) this structured rosé is demanding of good food with heft and robust flavours, like pork rillettes, herby sausage pizza, or it's really, really tasty with take out Asian beefy noodles.Tasted: 18 March 2020Tasted by: DJ KearneyPrices:
