Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2017

Mendoza, ArgentinaThis eye-catching label pays tribute to the history of malbec, and its journey from France to Argentina. The fruit is sourced from two estate vineyards, Nicosia (1,095m elevation) and Anglelica (920m elevation), planted to a pre-Phylloxera massale selection of malbec. Using 20 percent whole cluster, this was barrel fermented in new French oak barriques and puncheons for 30 days using indigenous yeasts, and then aged for 18 months. Expect sweet, brambly fruits with chocolate and cinnamon from the oak, notes that are forward but harmoniously integrated thanks to the barrel fermentation. It also manages to retain a lovely floral lift that will have you reaching for a second glass. Medium-full bodied with 14% abv, the tannins are incredibly fine and polished, making it quite approachable even at this stage. Pour yourself a glass while you’re busy preparing dinner and watch how it evolves over the next hour or so. Great wines change in the glass and this is no exception.Tasted: 01 March 2020Tasted by: Geoffrey Moss MWPrices:
