Niepoort NAT'Cool! Tinto 2017
Bairrada, Northern Portugal, PortugalDirk Niepoort's NAT'Cool! range of wines were created to meet certain criteria : be made as naturally as possible, be low alcohol, be terroir-driven, use native grapes to the region, be affordable, and be so smashable that it's only sold in 1L bottles. CHECK. He makes these wines in collaboration with winemakers around Portugal and the world, and also makes his own Niepoort ones, like this beauty little baga, from 40-400 year old vines in limestone-laced clay soiled Bairrada. This saw only inox, preserving the freshest fruit, and it was bottled unfiltered. Pouring a light plum / brick in hue, this light, joyous red is full of crushed florals, red currant, brisk cranberry acidity, and silk strong, slight tannins. The palate is mouthwatering with salinity, to a crunchy pink peppercorn finish. So light, charming, and joyous, you can understand why the label says DRINK ME. I sure will. Serve copiously, with a light chill, as intended. Obrigada.Tasted: 12 February 2020Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:BC | $27.00 | 1000ml | private wine shops |
