Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía 2014

Rioja, SpainBased on the 300ha ancestral home of Ygay, in southern Rioja Alta, Marqués de Murrieta is a 160 year old family-owned winery, and one of Spain's legendary producers. It is currently owned by Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, the tenth Conde de Creixell. Capellanía is a single plateau vineyard planted in 1945, at the highest point of Ygay, at 485 metres. After a short skin contact, this viura was gently vertical pressed and then settled and fermented in stainless before 15 months aging in new 225L French barrels. Pouring a green-gold in the glass, this has all but swallowed up the new oak, leaving a creamy, waxy, honeysuckle, herbal elderflower and quince white in its wake. There's a toasted pine nut note, downy lees, mustard seed spiciness, and some slight wood grip tannins that squeeze on the finish. Surprisingly expansive in the mouth for 12.5 degrees, this drinks lovely now, and will be a cellar-worthy candidate for the next five years easy. Classic. Give this time to open in the glass / bottle.Tasted: 21 January 2020Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
