Hickinbotham The Peake Cabernet Shiraz 2015
McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaThe Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard, established in 1971, is now a part of the country’s wine heritage, supplying fruit to produce many iconic labels. Winemaker Charlie Seppelt takes the lead in shiraz production, making a markedly different style than many full-bodied McLaren Vale cousins made at lower altitudes. In 2015 the classic mix is 56/44 cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. The nose medley of black cherries, blueberry jam, and intense, floral notes leads to a super rich attack, with full-bodied and opulent black fruits. It is entirely devoid of that pesky acidity that can ruin so many of these wines in the back end. The tannin and acid balance at four years is suggesting this will be fine in the bottle for a decade and beyond. It lends a lot of respectability to what was once a proud Australian blend. The finish is long and spicy with dried notes of sagebrush and thyme.Tasted: 10 January 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $89.99 | 750ml | BCLS |
