De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2014
New South Wales, AustraliaNow quite evolved (from a 375mL bottle), look for a medium amber colour and lots of dried orange, lemon, honey, and nuts on the nose, lacking the overt oak of a Sauternes or the racy acidity of a Tokaji. The palate is unctuous with 231 g/L residual sugar, but with surprising freshness on the palate (9.9 g/L total acidity) due to the concentrating effect of using botrytis-affected fruit. The concentration is superb, with pronounced botrytis character that shows why Noble One is one of the world’s great sweet wines. And it’s all yours at a very affordable price, too. I like this as a dessert on its own, and don’t feel like you need to finish the entire bottle in one sitting.
