M. Chapoutier Les Arènes Cornas 2016
Cornas, Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceThe vineyard is on the slopes inside the village of Cornas, partly on decomposed granite known locally as "gore", and partly on clay and calcareous alluvial deposits. Black plum, roast pepper, savoury, floral notes are mixed with curry, barnyard, and prune, and this is only the beginning. The palate is equally impressive with its bright, fresh demeanour of peppery, mineral, dense black and red fruit, liquorice, and spiced plum. The ageing is 80/20 in French oak and concrete. An excellent cheese wine for after dinner, or cellar for ten to fifteen years. “Les Arènes” (sands) comes from the term “Arènes granitiques” (granitic sands), a geological phenomenon that arises with the decomposition of granite caused by water and wind, giving the soil a sandy nature. The Cornas appellation name comes from the Celtic for “Burnt Land.”Tasted: 16 October 2019Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:SK | $42.97 | 750ml | SaskLiquor |
