M. Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonniers 2016

Crozes Hermitage, Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceLes Varonniers is a small 2.55-hectare block of syrah on the west-facing mistral-whipped side of the Hermitage hill. The soil here at Varognes, its historical name, is more Hermitage than Crozes-Hermitage, adding more complexity to this version of Crozes. Varonniers contains additional fruit from the old syrah vines in the Les Meysonniers in southern Crozes-Hermitage, hence the Les Varonniers moniker, a contraction of the two vineyard sites. I love the energy in this wine. The mid-palate is alive and fresh with a mix of red and black fruit, licorice and a savoury undercurrent. Not as intense as Hermitage but certainly as complex as it gets for Crozes-Hermitage. You can age this seven to ten years with no worries.Tasted: 16 October 2019Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
