M. Chapoutier Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine Rouge 2016

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceLa Bernadine is mostly grenache with ten percent of syrah and mourvedre, explaining why so much red fruit can be found on the nose. Chapoutier describes this wine in terms of ripe red cherries. Add licorice and garrigue as well. Like most Chapoutier wines, there is the terroir lurking everywhere. The attack is generous with dense tannins tracking toward a more opulent, softer style, less about refinement, and more about power. The palate is a mix of juicy raspberry/black plum fruit with flecks of orange, wet stony minerality, licorice, more garrigue, and savoury, roasted pepper. 2016 looks like a wine that will be better consumed mid-term, around 2023. That said, Chapoutier remains indifferent about vintages, saying, “each year tells its story. Under the Chapoutier biodynamic farming regime, it is usually a story worth tasting.”Tasted: 16 October 2019Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
