Expect ripe, jammy fruit that's awash in cinnamon and sweet spices from aging 14 months in French oak (35% new). At this level of ripeness, and 14.5% abv, it's a bit flat and lacking freshness, with a smattering of chalky tannins. Moderate length. Rodney Strong Russian River Pinot Noir Estate Vineyards 2016

Russian River, Sonoma County, California, United StatesThe 2015 offered a sea change in style and the 2016 treks down the new path too. A lighter, more translucent red colour previews a soft, spicy, cedar, forest floor affair that spills across the palate. The attack is silky and very spicy with a mix of twiggy, earthy, red fruit along with a more ethereal Russian River style, long on silky textures but without the heat and power of many of its brethren - and less sweetness.
