Mayer Granite Pinot Noir 2017

Yarra Valley, Victoria, AustraliaThis pale cherry hued pinot noir is, as the name suggests, drawn from granite soils in the Upper Yarra Valley. There are two such vineyards in Yarra Valley; this one is Swallowfield. Native fermented in small open fermenters, this spent three weeks on skins before pressing off and leaving on lees all year, then bottled without fining or filtration, and with minimum sulphur. Fragrant raspberry, cherry blossoms, anise, and ripe wild strawberries are filled in with forest moss and floor, bound together with potent spicing and fine smoke. Though light in hue and body (at a charming 13 degrees), this feels intense and concentrated in the mouth, the finely textured, stony, firm tannins drawing this through a warming cardamom and clove finish. Elegant and finessed, very much in youth, this is ready for drinking now and will also be with a few years in the cellar.Tasted: 25 January 2019Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
